Fingerprint Analysis of Contaminant Data: A Forensic Tool for Evaluating Environmental Contamination

چکیده

Several studies have been conducted on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to identify detection monitoring parameters for specific industries. One outcome of these studies was the evolution of an empirical multi-variant contaminant fingerprinting process. This process, Fingerprint Analysis of Leachate Contaminants (FALCON), was developed through the EPA’s Technical Support Center (TSC) in response to the need for identifying the source of contaminant plumes. FALCON combines data for several contaminants to develop a distinctive graphical fingerprint or multi-parameter chemical signature. These fingerprint patterns can be used to characterize the source of a contaminant plume, differentiate the contaminant plume from background conditions at the source, and monitor the migration of leachate into the environment. It can be applied to both organic and inorganic contaminants and is effective over a wide range of contaminant concentrations. This data evaluation process is analogous to using fingerprints to identify individuals. However, rather than using the size and location of ridges and swirls on the fingertip, the relative abundance of selected constituents is used to develop distinctive chemical signatures.

Risk assessment of industrial hydrocarbon release and transport in the vadose zone as it travels to groundwater table: A case study

In this paper, a modeling tool for risk assessment analysis of the movement of hydrocarbon contaminants in the vadose zone and mass flux of contamination release into the groundwater table was developed. Also, advection-diffusion-reaction equations in combination with a three-phase equilibrium state between trapped air, soil humidity, and solid particles of unsaturated soil matrix were numerica...

Evaluating Commercial Counter-Forensic Tools

Digital forensic analysts may find their task complicated by any of more than a dozen commercial software packages designed to irretrievably erase files and records of computer activity. These counter-forensic tools have been used to eliminate evidence in criminal and civil legal proceedings and represent an area of continuing concern for forensic investigators. In this paper, we review the per...

Chemometrics as a tool to analyse complex chemical mixtures Environmental forensics and fate of oil spills

Chemical characterisation of contaminant mixtures is important for environmental forensics and risk assessment. The great challenge in future research lies in developing suitable, rapid, reliable and objective methods for analysis of the composition of complex chemical mixtures. This thesis describes the development of such methods for assessing the identity (chemical fingerprinting) and fate (...

Probabilistic Contaminant Source Identification in Water Distribution Infrastructure Systems

Large water distribution systems can be highly vulnerable to penetration of contaminant factors caused by different means including deliberate contamination injections. As contaminants quickly spread into a water distribution network, rapid characterization of the pollution source has a high measure of importance for early warning assessment and disaster management. In this paper, a methodology...

Heavy Metal Contamination in the Sediments of Anzali International Wetland, Northern Iran Based on Type Regional Development

Background: The most important factors and problems threatening the Anzali Wetland are the contaminant load and sediments entering the wetland, as well as lack of an integrated management plan for this wetland. The main objectives of the current research were to explore whether there are significant differences in concentrations of Zn, Cd, and Pb in surface sediments among different sites (base...
